We strongly urge you to reverse course on allowing ride-hail services to operate on Market Street.

Residents who travel on Market Street regularly using sustainable modes of transportation know that their safety will be negatively impacted by an increase in cars on the corridor.

Car-free Market has transformed one of San Francisco’s most dangerous and congested streets into one where transit moves efficiently and quickly, people can ride bikes or scooters far more safely, and people walking or taking transit can cross the street without fear. Reintroducing cars will undo this progress. It also raises the mobility convenience of those with the most money over the needs of people who rely on affordable transportation like transit, biking, and rolling.

Supporting businesses in Mid-Market and Downtown would be better served by making the street more inviting with lively activations and events, and by working to solve the socioeconomic issues that have impacted downtown long before car-free Market Street went into effect.

Increasing car traffic does not increase foot traffic. In fact, allowing cars on Market will make the sidewalks less safe as well: travel lanes will feel more dangerous, forcing people on bikes and scooters onto the sidewalk and increasing the potential for collisions with pedestrians.

We stand with the Keep Market Street Moving Alliance in demanding that you halt plans to allow cars on Market Street, and that the City maintains the advances for safety, sustainability, and efficient, affordable public transit.
